The Village of Lindenhurst has received $200,000 in state funding to help repair flood-prone South Wellwood Avenue.

The money was secured by Assemb. Robert Sweeney (D-Lindenhurst) through the state’s Community Capital Assistance Program. The funding will be used for the village’s Coastal Zone South Wellwood Avenue Road Elevation and Drainage Improvement Project.

The project involves elevating the roadway on South Wellwood Avenue beginning at Spring Street and extending south to the Village Marina. The project is intended to alleviate severe roadway flooding during coastal storms and abnormal high tides, village officials said.

Doug Madlon, the deputy village clerk, said that at least some flooding in that area occurs three or four times a week and the road can be completely covered during storms. The cost of the entire project is not known at this time, Madlon said, but he expects it to cost more than the state funding will cover. He said officials will have a better estimate once the funding is finalized and an engineer is hired.

Construction is expected to begin in fall 2013, he said.
