Lindenhurst hires company to remove discarded electronics

The Village of Lindenhurst is contracting with a Mount Vernon company to remove discarded electronic equipment.
The village has signed an agreement with WeRecycle Llc to remove all collected e-waste recycling material. The village will receive 5 cents per pound of material removed.
Mayor Thomas Brennan said the village will still pick up electronics — such as televisions, stereos and gaming consoles — through its garbage collection. However, instead of taking these items to the Covanta waste processing facility in West Babylon, the village will store them in bins supplied by WeRecycle, which will then properly dispose of the items.
Electronics can contain toxic materials such as lead and mercury. A new state law that took effect Jan. 1 prohibits businesses and trash haulers from dumping e-waste in landfills or incinerators.
Deputy Mayor Kevin McCaffrey said that starting in March, the village will open up the public works yard on certain Saturdays so that residents can drop off their electronics.
