Lindenhurst holds hearing on exceeding tax cap

The Village of Lindenhurst will hold a public hearing Tuesday on a proposed law that would allow it to exceed the state property tax cap.

The proposed law gives the village the authority to exceed the 2 percent tax cap that was passed by state lawmakers in June.

Village Administrator Clerk-Treasurer Shawn Cullinane said the village has not completed its budget and does not yet know whether it will top the 2 percent.

The state has required municipalities to pass such a law by 60 percent of the vote before adopting a budget.

The village’s 2012-13 budget will be available for public review at Village Hall starting Dec. 27. A hearing on the proposed budget is slated for 7:30 p.m. Jan. 3.

The hearing on the proposed tax cap law will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Village Hall.
