Lindenhurst schools' new security system nearly complete

The Lindenhurst school district is nearing completion of new security measures that were approved last year.
IntraLogic Solutions of Massapequa performed a threat assessment for the entire district last fall and recommended the implementation of panic buttons, updated security software and cameras, card access for doors and door-ajar notifications. The company, which serves more than 70 school districts on Long Island, began work last year and during a presentation last month, president Lee Mandel promised everything would be completed by Oct. 14.
However, some aspects remain unfinished, district officials said. The district has completed the installation of panic buttons and the conversion of old cameras, software and DVRs to the new system. Card access for doors has also been completed, as have the video intercom systems. New cameras have been installed in all but one school.
New cameras in the middle school have not been fully installed due to wiring problems, according to Jacqueline Scrio, the district's assistant superintendent for business and noninstructional personnel. She said the installation is expected to be completed by the end of the month.
Staff training has not been completed and the district also needs to link its PA systems to a lockdown feature, Scrio said in an email.
The district also had planned to implement door-ajar notifications, but Scrio said they are now revisiting the idea after speaking with other districts.
"Some districts feel they are not getting as much value out of this as they had hoped," Scrio wrote. "We have not decided to not proceed, but feel it is only prudent to tap into other districts that have already implemented this system for their input."
At the time the board of education approved the new measures last year, the estimated cost was about $470,000. District spokeswoman Alison DeMaria said she did not have an updated cost for the new measures.
