Lindenhurst votes to exceed tax cap

The Village of Lindenhurst has approved a local law that allows it to exceed the property tax cap.

The village board approved the taxation law Tuesday after a public hearing. The law gives the village the authority to exceed the state’s 2 percent tax cap that was passed by state lawmakers in June. The state has required municipalities to pass such a law by 60 percent of the government body’s vote before adopting its budget. Village officials said they have not completed the 2012-13 budget and do not yet know whether it will top the 2 percent.

Officials said the budget will be available for public review at Village Hall starting Dec 27. A hearing on the budget is slated for Jan. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
