LIRR: Sunday service disruptions may have been caused by deep freeze

Freezing temperatures, dipping below zero, were a possible cause of two Long Island Rail Road disruptions Sunday, an LIRR spokesman said. But neither problem is expected to affect Monday morning service.

There were two “incidents of note” on Sunday, which compromised service for hours, said LIRR spokesman Aaron Donovan. Both are under investigation, Donovan added.

At about 10 a.m. on Sunday, there was a third rail failure at Valley Stream, which could have been weather-related, Donovan said. Service was suspended on the Babylon, Far Rockaway, Long Beach and West Hempstead branches. It was restored in the early afternoon.

The Port Jefferson branch also had multiple cancellations and delays on Sunday due to emergency track work for a broken rail near Carle Place. More than four afternoon trains from Huntington to Penn Station were canceled Sunday afternoon.
