LIRR mostly back on schedule after signal troubles caused delays, MTA says

Service on the Long Island Rail Road is mostly back on schedule after signal troubles caused delays and cancellations during Tuesday evening’s rush hour.

The signal issues shut down one of the East River tunnels, said Nancy Gamerman, a Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokeswoman.

Nearly all train lines experienced cancellations and delays as officials consolidated trains, she said, adding that there was overcrowding on some trains.

As of 8:30 p.m., most lines were back on schedule, though a number of trains between Penn Station and Port Washington and Seaford had been canceled.

Evening rush hour was the second time on Tuesday that the LIRR experienced service problems. Signal issues in the same tunnels led to scattered delays averaging 10 minutes at 9 a.m., but trains were reported to be back on schedule by 10:15 a.m.
