A key MTA committee Monday approved a land exchange deal between the Long Island Rail Road and the Town of Babylon that will advance the town’s Wyandanch Rising project, and also open the door for the possible construction of a parking garage near the Wyandanch station.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s finance committee voted unanimously to approve the LIRR’s transfer of a 1.49-acre parcel to the town to be developed as part of its planned $500-million Wyandanch Rising transit-oriented development. The property includes parking space and the Wyandanch station building, which the town plans to reconstruct at its own cost.

In exchange, the town will turn over to the LIRR a 2.16-acre property on Acorn Street near the station. LIRR president Helena Williams said the LIRR is considering eventually building a “parking structure” at the site that could increase the number of parking spots currently available at Wyandanch.

The full MTA board will vote on the plan today.
