The Long Island Rail Road was operating on or close to schedule Monday afternoon for trains going through Jamaica after rain-related signal problems earlier in the day had caused delays of up to 40 minutes, a spokesman said.

The commuter service said in an email alert at 1:21 p.m. that trains were on or close in both directions. There were residual delays of up to 30 minutes on trains east of Jamaica, the service said.

The signal problem, and an earlier switch problem in Port Washington that caused at least one cancellation, were because of the heavy rain, spokesman Sal Arena said.

"I don't know specifically where the water was or what happened, but it was weather related," Arena said of the signal problem in Jamaica, which began shortly after 11 a.m.

Earlier a spokesman said the signal problem did not appear to be weather related.

At least three trains were canceled because of the signal problem in Jamaica, the LIRR said, and one more -- the eastbound 11:36 a.m. train from the Atlantic Terminal due in Far Rockaway at 12:32 p.m. -- was delayed 46 minutes

In Port Washington, flooding caused a switch problem, Arena said. At least one train was canceled, the 11:40 a.m. from Port Washington due Penn Station at 12:25 p.m., the service said.
