The Long Island Rail Road has been issuing alerts and updates via Twitter since January 2010. The LIRR’s tweets inform followers when a train is being delayed, cancelled or rerouted because of events like a snow storm or derailment. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority notes that the LIRR twitter handle is not monitored for incoming messages 24/7, so all comments and concerns should be reported to 718-217-5477.
