LIVE BLOG: LIC Class A championship: Division vs. Harborfields
Welcome to the LIC Class A championship between Harborfields and Division here at Farmingdale State. The winner goes to the state semifinals next weekend in Troy.
FIRST QUARTER: Both teams have been excellent defensively all season so it's no surprise the offense has got off to slow starts. Harborfields leads 8-6 midway through the quarter. No one has more than one basket for either side as the scoring has been spread out.
Julie Ballantyne converted a three-point play off a steal by Kristen Costello and Kristen Stuart scored to give Division a 11-8 lead. Sara Tane hit a jumper to make it 11-10. That's the score after one. Division 11, Harborfields 10. Ballantyne has five points, while Harborfields has five different scorers.
SECOND QUARTER: Another three-point play by Ballantyne gives Division a 14-10 lead. She has eight points.
A three-pointer by Lynn Zhong has given Harborfields a 17-16 lead with 5:51 left. Ballantyne has eight points to lead Division and Kasey Stolba and Alexia O'Connor each have four points for Harborfields.
Taylor Mailings answers with a three-pointer to give Division a 19-17 lead after the timeout.
Division is doing a great job on the glass. Costello and Mailings score on putbacks to extend it to 23-17 with 4:02 left. Mailings then nails a three-pointer with 3:13 left extending the Division lead to 26-17 and it capped a 10-0 run. Mailings has eight points in the quarter.
Division's defense has been real good. Harborfields hasn't scored since the 5:51 mark. Division leads 28-17 with 55 seconds left in the half.
HALFTIME: Division 31, Harborfields 17
Division dominated the second quarter. Division ended the half with a 15-0 run. Harborfields went scoreless in the final 5:51. Ballantyne has 11 points and Mailings has eight points to lead Division. Stolba and O'Connor each have four points for Harborfields.
THIRD QUARTER: Harborfields has broke the scoreless streak with 7:09 left. Bridgit Ryan hit a jumper to bring Harborfields within 31-19, but Mailings answers back with her third three-pointer of the game. Division leads 34-19.
Harborfields is showing some life. Ryan has six points in the quarter and O'Connor just hit a jumper to pull the Tornadoes within 36-25 with 3:12 left.
A baseline layup by Zhong and a three-pointer by O'Connor have cut the Division lead tp 36-30. Stuart answers with a putback and a 38-30 lead. Amy Werbitsky hit two jumpers to bring Harborfields within 40-34 with 28 seconds left before Stuart scored with 13 seconds left. Division leads 42-34 after three quarters. Stuart had six points in the quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER: Costello scores on a drive and Division leads 44-34 with 6:44 left in the game. Parmese goes 1-for-2 from the foul line and Costello scored on a putback of the missed free throw. Division's height has really caused the Tornadoes problems. Stuart (12 points) scored on a drive to extend the Division lead to 49-34 with 5:35 left.
Harborfields has cut it to 10 after Zhong hits two free throws. Division leads 49-39 with 3:40 left.
Harborfields won't go quietly. Stolba went 1-for-2 from the foul line and then hit a jumper with 2:53 left to cut it to 49-42. Ballantyne scores on a drive off the glass to extend the lead to 51-42 with 2:27 left.
Ryan hits a three-pointer to cut the Division lead to 51-45 with 52 seconds left. Ryan hits her third trey of the quarter and it is 51-48 with 29 seconds left. Mailings hits two free throws with 28 seconds left to make it 53-48.
Zhong just misses a three-pointer with 16 seconds left and Parmese goes 1-for-2 from the foul line to make it 54-48. Costello blocks a three-point attempt by Ryan and goes 2-for-2 from the foul line with nine seconds left. Zhong hits a three to make it 56-51 with four seconds left. Mailings goes 1-for-2 from the foul line with 3.2 seconds left to extend the lead to 57-51.
Division wins 57-51.
