Live dolphin washes ashore at W. Gilgo Beach

A live dolphin came ashore at West Gilgo Beach in Babylon at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, officials said, and mammal rescue specialists were alerted to try to aid the stranded animal.
Rob DiGiovanni of the Riverhead Foundation said a team was dispatched to the beach to place the 5-1/2 foot animal in a stretcher and transport it safely to the foundation’s rescue tank in Riverhead for assessment and whatever treatment might be necessary.
