Two local village finance officials hold leadership positions in two state associations of finance officers.

Garden City Village auditor James Olivo was elected president for the 2011-2012 term of the New York State Government Finance Officers Association. Olivo’s election has historical significance since he is the association’s first president to come from a village.

Lawrence Village administrator and treasurer David E. Smollett is president for 2010-2011 of the New York State Society of Municipal Finance Officers. His term ends in October.

Smollett said having two local municipal finance professionals representing statewide associations is “real good and positive news.”

The New York State Government Finance Officers Association, based in Albany, is a professional organization of more than 1,230 public and private sector government finance professionals throughout the state. The New York State Society of Municipal Finance Officers is a professional organization of city and village finance officers who represent 553 villages and 63 cities.
