Local vinyl in the Record Store Day groove

This year's Record Store Day will have a distinctly Long Island flavor, with two exclusive vinyl releases coming from Taking Back Sunday and Straylight Run released by West Babylon's Brookvale Records on April 21.

Taking Back Sunday's "We Play Songs" will be a four-song 12-inch -- featuring acoustic versions of "Ghost Man on Third" and "Your Own Disaster," recorded at Fingerprints in Long Beach, Calif., and acoustic versions of "Faith (When I Let You Down)" and "Great Romances of the 20th Century," recorded at Looney Tunes in West Babylon. Only 2,000 copies of the 12-inch will be printed, including 300 pressed on yellow vinyl available only through Fingerprints and 300 pressed on blue vinyl available only at Looney Tunes.

The Rockville Centre-based band wrapped up its tour of Asia and Australia last week and will head to England next month for a quick tour before spending most of the summer on the road in America, co-headlining this year's Warped Tour.

Another limited Record Store Day release will come from Straylight Run, featuring John Nolan and Shaun Cooper from Taking Back Sunday. The band will reissue its debut album "Straylight Run" on vinyl for the first time, pressed on yellow vinyl and brown vinyl to match the album's cover.

Of course, there will be plenty of other non-Long Island-related Record Store Day releases April 21 as well -- ranging from an Arcade Fire 12-inch of "Sprawl II" to a split single of "Respect," done by Aretha Franklin on one side and Otis Redding on the other -- available at many of the area's record stores.

Some of the stores also will feature live performances throughout the day -- offering plenty of reasons to get out and support the local businesses.
