Logan Frati perfect for ESM
Here is the story from Ian Cutler.
Logan Frati threw mostly fastballs Monday, but when perfection was on the line, the Eastport-South Manor pitcher decided to change it up against Comsewogue.
It worked out perfectly.
After retiring the first 20 batters he faced, Frati threw a changeup and got Riley Shea to ground out to shortstop Michael Flynn on the first pitch, finishing off a 10-0 win in Suffolk League V play.
It is the first perfect game in Eastport-South Manor's 10-year program history, according to baseball coach Todd Skala.
"Your heart is in your throat for that last play, but I knew Flynn would make it and that was that," said Frati, a senior. "I knew [Shea] was a fastball hitter and he swings early in the count. I knew it'd be a challenge, but I felt good about my changeup and I guess the deception worked."
Frati cruised against Comsewogue (1-5), striking out 13 batters and needing only 74 pitches. The closest he came to allowing a baserunner was in the fourth inning, when first baseman Billy Goncalves fielded a ball and flipped it to Frati, who barely beat the runner to first for the out for ESM (5-1).
Frati faced his only three-ball count with two outs in the fifth inning but picked up a strikeout on a 3-and-2 fastball that was swung on and missed.
So, how does it feel to throw a perfect game? "It's very exciting, but I can't really tell you. It hasn't sunk it yet," Frati said. "After it happened it was a surreal moment. It's something I'll remember for the rest of my life."
