Long Beach boardwalk section set to reopen

The first four-block section of Long Beach’s new $44.2 million boardwalk will open to pedestrians as soon as this weekend, city officials said.
Long Beach officials will make the reopening announcement at 11 a.m. Friday at the end of National Boulevard, close to the Allegria Hotel, to celebrate the city’s milestone of a “Stronger, Smarter and Safer” reconstruction effort after superstorm Sandy, officials said.
The firm that is building the boardwalk — which replaces the century-old predecessor destroyed by Sandy — is required by contract to finish by Thursday the middle four-fifths of a mile, from Laurelton Boulevard to Long Beach Boulevard. The project is on time and within budget, officials have said.
Plainview-based Grace Industries’ contract calls for the firm to complete the entire 2.2-mile structure by Nov. 12. Grace is required to reach “substantial completion” of the entire boardwalk by Oct. 13.
In honor of the former boardwalk, the new one will feature old-time benches, light poles and fixtures.
