Long Beach could enact property tax relief law for Sandy victims

The Long Beach City Council could vote Tuesday night to adopt a law that would provide property tax assessment relief for homeowners who suffered damage in superstorm Sandy.

The city could opt into the superstorm Sandy Assessment Relief Act the state adopted earlier this year.

The act states that cities and towns can adopt a law that grants assessment relief to Sandy victims. The act grants victims a rebate on their taxes based on a formula established by the state.

Long Beach was hit with an estimated $200 million in damage during Sandy, with much of the devastation focused on residential neighborhoods.

The city council is scheduled to vote on the act at its regular meeting, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Long Beach City Hall, 1 W. Chester St. The meeting is open to the public.
