Long Beach has approved a second set of stiffer penalties for landlords who do not maintain their properties.

A code change approved by the city council at Tuesday night’s meeting quadruples the fine for failing to make repairs, to $1,000 per day.

The measure changes city codes so Long Beach can levy the tougher fines against owners and managers of buildings with three to 24 units, according to documents filed at City Hall.

An August code change altered city codes so Long Beach could levy the tougher fines against owners and managers of buildings with 25 or more units, according to documents filed at City Hall.

The code change approved Tuesday night states that “each day on which a violation continues shall constitute a separate offense.” The change is effective immediately, documents state.
