Long Beach has postponed a public hearing on a proposal to lower the citywide speed limit to 30 mph.

The hearing, originally slated to occur Tuesday, was moved to July 16. City officials said they wanted to hold the public hearing before a full board and two members were absent.

The proposal states that the speed limit will be 30 mph everywhere in the city, except some neighborhood streets where it is already lower. The maximum speed limit in some parts of the city is 35 mph.

City Manager Jack Schnirman said city leaders are hopeful a lowered speed limit will help cut down on speeding in Long Beach.

The public hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. on July 16 at Long Beach City Hall, 1 W. Chester St.
