Long Beach to help residents fix damaged bulkheads

Long Beach today will announce a plan to assist residents in rebuilding damaged bulkheading on their properties.
The plan is intended to help residents on the bayside of the barrier island city, said public works commissioner Jim LaCarrubba. The bulkheads on many of those residents’ properties were damaged during superstorm Sandy, which affected both the bay and oceanfront sides of the city.
The plan, which will be revealed at a news conference today, will assist residents in repairing or replacing their bulkheading “so that it is safe, standardized, and strong,” city officials said in a statement.
The work will be performed through the city’s public works department, the statement said.
Long Beach is fixing public bulkheading in the city through a different program, officials said.
Details of the plan will be unveiled today at 5 p.m. at a news conference on Armour Street in Long Beach.
