PORT WASHINGTON

Screening for breast cancer available

Nassau County women 40 years and older are eligible for a breast cancer screening in Port Washington on Dec. 3.

The program is being co-sponsored by state Sen. Jack M. Martins (R-Mineola). Nurses and technicians will administer mammograms and clinical breast examinations. Participants will also learn how to conduct self-examinations.

Exam results will be sent to patients and their physicians.

Applicants without health insurance may be eligible for a free screening. Those with insurance will have to cover their co-pay and must bring an insurance information card.

The program will be from 9 a.m. to noon at the Port Washington Library, at 1 Library Dr. Appointments are required and will be made on a first-come, first-served basis. Applicants can register by calling Martins' office at 516-746-5924.

National Adoption Day event planned

County Executive Edward Mangano announced that the Nassau County Department of Social Services and Nassau County Family Court, in partnership with the Long Island Children's Museum, will participate in National Adoption Day on Nov. 23. The event will be held at the museum in Uniondale at 10 a.m., where the adoptions of 16 children in foster care will be finalized. Following the ceremony, a reception will be held for families finalizing adoptions and families who have adopted during the year.

"This is a wonderful and inspiring celebration," Mangano said. "Nassau County is dedicated to building and strengthening our families," he said, adding that the county is devoted to ensuring every child up for adoption has a permanent, loving family.

November is recognized as National Adoption Month, the purpose of which is to focus attention on children in the child welfare system that are in foster care and waiting to be adopted.

"The Family Court is thrilled to participate in providing safe, loving and permanent homes for the children of our County," said Supervising Judge Edmund M. Dane.

"The Long Island Children's Museum's partnership . . . allows us collectively to support and enrich Nassau County's children and families," said museum president Suzanne LeBlanc, who will provide each new family with a complimentary yearlong membership to the museum.

Those interested in fostering or adopting children, should call 516-227-8284 for information.

BALDWIN

Mural is unveiled on pharmacy wall

The Baldwin Civic Association officially unveiled its commissioned mural on the wall of a local pharmacy at 1651 Grand Ave.

Alice Mizrachi, 38, who has painted extensively in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens, around the nation and abroad, said she "seeks to spread empathy and compassion through site-specific projects that are positive visual responses to social issues that affect neighboring residents."

The Baldwin mural is called "Let's Grow" and is meant "to reflect the community's diversity," said Karen Montalbano, an association leader.

Montalbano would not say how much Mizrachi was paid, only that "we got a very good deal, a real discount."

Nassau County Legis. Laura Curran (D-Baldwin), who attended the unveiling, said: "I'm glad to see the empty canvas be filled with beautiful art."

Rita Cavanagh, chairwoman of the civic association's art committee, said it took her almost two years to find a place for the mural.

"I am part of the community and a member of the chamber of commerce," said Lutful Chowdhury, of Westbury, who has owned the pharmacy in Baldwin for 10 years. "I was happy to help."

Turkey drive is set to benefit food bank

Long Island's largest food drive, the seventh annual Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank, will take place on Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Bethpage Federal Credit Union's headquarters at 899 S. Oyster Bay Rd.

Long Islanders are asked to drop off frozen turkeys, nonperishable food items (except those in glass containers), supermarket gift cards or cash donations, which will go directly to Island Harvest to help supply Thanksgiving holiday meals to more than 300,000 Long Islanders through its distribution network of 570 food pantries, soup kitchens and other feeding programs.

"Bethpage Federal Credit Union is an avid supporter of Island Harvest and its mission to end hunger on Long Island," said Linda Armyn, senior vice president at Bethpage.

For those unable to travel to Bethpage's main branch on Wednesday, Nassau and Suffolk residents can visit any of Bethpage's 33 locations to drop off cash donations.

Since the first Bethpage Turkey Drive was organized in 2009, hundreds of community volunteers have helped collect about 23,000 turkeys and more than 74,000 pounds of food. Island Harvest has seen an increase in the requests for food and support services among the 570 community-based agencies it serves. About 70,000 individuals receive food help from the Island Harvest network each week.
