Long Island Cares to open food bank in Lindenhurst

Food bank Long Island Cares is opening up a new office in Lindenhurst Village to serve communities hurt by superstorm Sandy.
The Hauppauge-based Long Island Cares Inc. The Harry Chapin Food Bank will open the South Shore Services Center at 163-1 N. Wellwood Ave. The storefront site, which is due to open March 1, will serve as a community assistance center, offering emergency food, pet food, cleaning and other supplies.
The organization also will be instituting the Small Grants Assistance Program to help subsidize the replacement of essential appliances damaged by Sandy. Residents can pick up applications for the grants, which range up to $1,000, at the center. In addition to Lindenhurst, the center will serve residents in Copiague, Babylon Village and Amityville Village.
Paule Pachter, executive director of Long Island Cares, said in a statement that the new location was chosen “because of the way Lindenhurst pulled together immediately following Hurricane Sandy.”
The center, which will feature an emergency food pantry and training and conference rooms, is being funded largely through a grant from the Robin Hood Foundation.
