LONG ISLAND CRIME BRIEFS
NASSAU COUNTY
Convicted cop killer's
parole hearing delayed
A parole hearing for the man convicted of killing Nassau County Officer Matthew Giglio in 1975 was postponed this week at the man's request, state officials said.
The hearing for John MacKenzie was put off for up to 6 months at his request, the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision said Monday. The agency said the inmate cited "pending litigation" as the reason.
MacKenzie was 29 years old in 1975 when he shot and fatally wounded Giglio, 35. MacKenzie, formerly of Whitestone, Queens, has been seeking parole since 2000, when he served the minimum 25 years required by his life sentence.
When the Parole Board last denied MacKenzie's request for release in 2012, it said in a brief decision that he had killed a police officer and had a "larcenous" history, citing "significant community opposition."
NORTH BELLMORE
Baby born on front lawn,
twin born in ambulance
Nassau County police officers and police ambulance medical technicians delivered a baby boy Wednesday morning on the front lawn of a North Bellmore residence.
The baby's twin brother was born moments later inside the ambulance on the way to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, police said.
"Both boys and mother are healthy and resting comfortably," police said in a news release.
First Precinct officers and two ambulance medical technicians responded shortly after 9:35 a.m. to a Gina Court residence for a 29-year-old woman in labor, police said.
"While attempting to transport the mother," the officers and AMTs wound up delivering the boy on the front lawn, police said.
COMMACK
Collision forces closure
of LIE North Service Road
A two-vehicle crash closed the North Service Road of the Long Island Expressway in Commack for hours Wednesday, with one person airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries, police and transportation officials said.
The crash occurred shortly before 11:30 a.m. between a small sport utility vehicle going west on the service road and another vehicle trying to make a turn onto Commack Road, Suffolk police said.
Suffolk Fourth Precinct detectives and crime scene investigators were dispatched to the scene.
The SUV driver was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with unspecified injuries, police said.
Other details were not available, including whether anyone else was injured, police said.
The westbound service road reopened just before 4 p.m., police said.
WANTAGH
2 charged with possession
of drugs after traffic stop
A traffic stop in Wantagh led to the arrest of two men on drug-possession charges Tuesday afternoon, Nassau County police said.
Christopher V. Bracco, 28, of 648 Nassau Ave., Freeport, and Michael S. Wood, 28, of 397 Wynsum Ave., Merrick, were arrested after the stop on St. Regis Street near Bayview Avenue about 4:45 p.m. and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana. Both were scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead, but the outcomes of the hearings weren't available.
Police said that Bracco was driving westbound on St. Regis in "a suspicious manner" when he was stopped by officers.
During the subsequent investigation, police said, officers found both Bracco and Wood were in possession of "a clear container containing amphetamine and marijuana."
The two were arrested without incident, police said.
