LI Head Start to be honored at White House

From yoga to yogurt, Long Island Head Start has been working to teach at-risk kids healthy practices. Now, the group will be recognized at the White House with other winners of a nationwide video contest spearheaded by Michelle Obama.

The first lady invited community groups to submit videos about their efforts to promote wellness for the Let’s Move: Communities on the Move Video Challenge, part of her anti-obesity campaign. She announced the winners on Wednesday.

“With lots of creativity and a great sense of fun, these congregations and organizations have shown us the inspiring work being done across the country to help our children lead healthier lives,” Obama said in a news release.

“Childhood obesity is one of the greatest challenges facing the low-income and at-risk families in Suffolk County who are served by Long Island Head Start,“ said Debrah Garcia, chief executive of the organization.

Garcia said her team is excited to visit the White House when the date is announced.
