This weekend's RXR Long Island Marathon events are expected to draw thousands of participants and observers amid heightened security even though it will be less stringent than last year's races, which followed the bombings at the Boston Marathon, Nassau County officials said Thursday.

"While no specific threat exists, the Nassau County Police Department has put forth enhanced security measures for the safety of the . . . participants, spectators and all members of our community," County Executive Edward Mangano said, calling the marathon "one of the Island's most exciting athletic events."

Events include a Fun Run, and 1-mile and 5k races on Saturday, and the 26.2-mile marathon, half-marathon and 10k on Sunday. The marathon will begin at the Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale and end at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.
