As we head into Memorial Day weekend and unofficial start to summer, the Friday ritual of a crazy commute to eastern parts of the Island -- both on the roads and rails -- has begun. 

On Twitter, Long Island Rail Road riders are sharing photos of being cramped spaces. To alleviate congestion, the LIRR's "Cannonball," its nonstop express train to the Hamptons, started today with Hamptons Reserve service.

On the roads, our traffic cameras show buildups headed east on major roads, including the Northern and Southern state parkways and the Long Island Expressway. 

In the opposite direction, an accident has blocked two lanes on the LIE at Exit 33 in Lake Success as of 6:25 p.m.

The good news is that the weekend weather looks promising. It will begin clearing up on Saturday and give way to sunny skies Sunday and Monday, according to the National Weather Service. Read more.
