Welcome to Newsday's LI Now live post for Monday, April 14, 2014.
Public schools on Long Island and in New York City were closed Monday as spring break kicked off, so you may notice less cars on the road. Passover also starts tonight, so those observing the holiday will be leaving work earlier. The LIRR added extra trains (see below) to accommodate these travelers.
Today's live coverage has concluded, but reporter Carl MacGowan will be in Port Jefferson tonight to cover the following hearing and budget vote.
BUDGET VOTE. The Port Jefferson Village Board is scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. to hold a public hearing on the proposed 2014-15 budget, followed by a vote on the spending plan. The meeting will be at Village Hall, 121 W. Broadway. Follow MacGowan’s Twitter updates @CarlMacGowan.
TOBACCO BILL SIGNING
Earlier today, reporter David Schwartz was also tweeting from Huntington, where Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone signed a bill that raised the legal minimum age to purchase tobacco and e-cigarettes to 21 years old.
