Long Island Rail Road extends tickets’ validity period

Long Island Rail Road riders now have twice as much time to use their one-way and round-trip tickets before they expire.
As of Tuesday, the validity period for the tickets has been extended from 30 days to 60 days.
The LIRR has also extended the refund period for 10-trip tickets to six months, from 30 days. The new policies also affect Metro-North Railroad customers.
“We’re pleased to make it possible to broaden our ticket validity and refund policies to further benefit Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North customers,” said MTA chairman Joseph Lhota, who added that the change shows the “MTA’s commitment to customer service.”
The MTA shortened the validity period of its tickets in January 2011 as part of a plan to increase fare revenue. But riders and elected officials blasted the move, leading the MTA to vote in July to extend the period.
The changes are expected to cost the MTA about $6 million a year. A $10 fee for ticket refunds remains in effect.
