Long Islanders dig out after blizzard; more snow ahead, but far less of it

The blizzard that spent the better part of a day walloping Long Island has moved on, and now the region tries to return to something close to normal — at least until Tuesday night, when more snow is in the forecast, with yet another dose possible by late Thursday.
The National Weather Service said it won't come close to anything resembling the blizzard, which hit Long Island Sunday and dumped 29.1 inches of snow at Long Island MacArthur Airport — unofficially a record — overnight into Monday The weather service estimated new snow totals into Wednesday below a half inch. More snow, mixed with rain, is possible after 1 p.m. Thursday.
On Tuesday, Long Island commuters will be able to ride on six branches of the LIRR after the entire system shutdown during the storm.
Dozens of school districts were scheduled to be closed or teaching remotely.
And after travel bans for part of Monday in Suffolk and Nassau counties, highways and most major streets were expected to be clear by Tuesday’s morning rush hour, according to AAA Northeast, but town supervisors warned that some residential streets might not reopen until Tuesday afternoon.
Long Island MacArthur, Kennedy and LaGuardia airports were resuming service late Monday after thousands of canceled flights earlier in the day.
