Longwood School District held its first Literacy Day Saturday at Longwood Middle School in Middle Island, and for one of the main events, high school students participated in a poetry slam.

“It was a great opportunity for kids who don’t normally have the opportunity to express themselves to do so,” said high school English teacher Grace Ioanna, who helped organize the event.

About a dozen students participated in the event, with many sharing personal stories about teenage life.

“It is amazing to see how they progressed from the first time they read a poem to the second time or third time they read it – one student was able to memorize his poem.”
