THE BUDGET

The district is proposing a budget of $70,907,568 for the 2010-11 school year, an increase of 3.42 percent over the current budget of $68,564,261. The tax levy would rise to $60,735,040, an increase of 5.42 percent over the current figure of $57,612,480.

The district said it was unable to provide figures on the tax increase for the average homeowner because of assessment complications that make that difficult.

The proposed budget includes a 3.5 percent increase in teacher salaries - plus step increases ranging from 1 to 2.2 percent - and elimination of three teachers and one groundsman.

The district is adding three electives at the high school - advanced placement psychology, music theory and critical issues - and planning to teach basic computer skills to fifth-graders and modify quarterly exploratory periods in middle school to include math, science and technology.

In addition to the proposed budget, the district has two referendums on the ballot. One asks for permission to expend up to $1,134,334 from the district's capital reserve fund for window replacement at the high school. The other asks for permission to spend up to $190,000 from the district's technology replacement fund to install StarBoards, a kind of interactive whiteboard, for grades K-2 and a backup generator and cooling system at the high school.
