Kim Mackay ran to a second-place finish in 16 minutes, 19 seconds and was one of five runners to finish in the top seven for Kellenberg in a 23-35 win over St. John the Baptist Wednesday in a CHSAA girls cross country meet at Sunken Meadow State Park.

It was the first league loss in six years for St. John the Baptist.

The Cougars' last defeat came on Oct. 8, 2003.

Anne Carey took first on the 2.5-mile course in 15:41 to lead St. John the Baptist, while Alyssa Dorney took fourth in 16:49 for the Cougars.

"It's a rivalry the way it should be," Kellenberg coach Marty Brown said. "There's respect on both sides."

Kylie Pearse took third in 16:20 for the Firebirds (2-0), while Mary Hutchinson, Ashlin Conroy and Mia Imbesi finished fifth through seventh.
