Malverne launches new recycling program

Malverne Village’s board of trustees are reminding residents of the new recycling initiative that began Wednesday.

At the board meeting Wednesday night, they asked residents to place corrugated cardboard, like shipping boxes, at the curb separate from garbage or other recycling, before 7 a.m. each Wednesday. This does not include pizza boxes, cereal boxes, juice boxes or food packaging.

“We need the cooperation of all the residents,” Trustee Joseph J. Hennessy said.

The initiative is part of an effort to control the cost of sanitation disposal. About 15 percent of residents don’t recycle, officials said.

Grossmann’s Farm new farmer, Bill Walsh, attended the meeting to provide an update about the reopening of the 105-year-old vegetable farm. Walsh said he has been planting in the farm’s greenhouse and will soon start farming outdoors.

The farm will have a volunteer night April 20 at 7:30 p.m. Opening day will be on Saturday, April 30.

The board also announced it would hold a public hearing on April 14 at 7:30 p.m. on the tentative budget for the fiscal year beginning June 1. A copy of the budget is available for public viewing at the Village Clerk’s Office.
