Malverne School Voters Guide 2010
VOTING
7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Howard T. Herber Middle School
THE BUDGET
The district is proposing a budget of $46,011,065 for 2010- 11, an increase of 2.71 percent from the current $44,797,065. The tax levy would increase by 3.69 percent from the current $34,523,841 to $35,798,174 for 2010-11.
Officials said they could not estimate the amount of taxes to be paid on the average single-family house under the proposed budget due to incomplete information. Current school taxes are $6,619.22 for a home assessed at $896.
Under the proposed budget, 12 teachers and four support staff would be cut. The district is negotiating with the union over a labor contract, which expires June 30.
Also, a referendum seeks approval to spend up to $1.1 million from a capital fund for improvements to school buildings and grounds. That would include a new parking lot and upgrades for greater disabled access at Davison Avenue Elementary School, as well as fire alarm, plumbing, electrical and intercom systems at various schools.
