Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano has announced that 1,562 new LED traffic light systems have replaced older ones throughout Nassau, leading to savings of about $1.1 million annually while increasing safety with brighter bulbs.

“This effort will increase public safety on our roads, make a safer environment and help save taxpayer money,” Mangano said.

The project, which replaced all of Nassau’s three-light systems, was funded by a state grant of $812,000 from the New York Power Authority.

County officials said the traffic light project began in May 2010 and ended late last month.

Mangano also announced a new initiative at the Nassau County Jail in East Meadow to install energy efficient lighting that he said will save “millions annually in energy usage and maintenance.”

He said the jail project replaces a system that is “antiquated and inefficient”; it is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Mangano had no cost figure for the jail project, but said the money would come from capital project funds.
