Mangano to attend Island Park meeting

Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano and other officials will be at Island Park’s town hall-style meeting Tuesday night to address issues that concern village residents.

The Island Park Civic Association meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the village’s library (176 Long Beach Rd.). Along with Mangano, County Legis. Howard J. Kopel and commissioners from various county departments will attend the meeting, which is expected to last two hours. The meeting room has a capacity of 70 people.

Susan Baxt Faza, president of the civic association, said she expects residents to raise questions about the future of the Long Beach Motor Inn, the impact of the Barrett Power Plant’s filing for reduced tax assessment and the repair of the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant. Residents want the motor inn closed, Faza said.

“The motel has a high crime rate and is not safe for the neighborhood nor the homeless women and children who are being placed there,” she said. They “deserve better living conditions than … living in the same motel with parolees also placed there by the county.”

Residents are concerned about how the county will help if the power plant’s assessment is reduced, Faza said, and they want an update on the repair project of the sewage plant.

“We as a fishing and boating community are very concerned with the health of our waterways,” Faza said.
