The North Hempstead Town Board has approved the expansion of a retail building on a parcel in Manhasset previously under consideration for a rezoning.
Centre Manhasset Llc intends to demolish a one-story building and replace it with a two-story building at 1900 Northern Blvd., said attorney Paul Bloom. The new space would allow a 7,802-square-foot expansion.
The town board last week unanimously approved the site plan.
The building, on three acres of land, is next to a Daffy’s and an Apple store.
Bloom said there is no retail tenant yet. He said he doubted Apple would seek to expand into the building. “The likelihood of that is virtually zero,” he said.
Citing concerns about traffic, Theresa Larre, president of the Strathmore Village Civic Association, said, “We oppose this expansion.”
In the 1940s, the site was rezoned to allow recreation and parking. In 1992, following a request to allow an office on the property, the town changed the zoning to residential.
Last year, the tenant wanted the zoning changed from residential to parking for the Daffy’s and Apple store customers.
But residents of the nearby Strathmore Village community complained that such a change would add traffic to a congested area and hurt property values.
