Michael Meehan, Manorhaven’s mayor since 2008, has resigned a few months before his term was to end.

Citing family and business reasons, Meehan stepped down as of March 17.

“It has been great to be involved in local politics,” he wrote in an email. “However, my choice to resign now was made to allow new leadership to emerge in Manorhaven as I leave public life for private life.”

Deputy Mayor John M. DiLeo Jr., who has been presiding over the village’s board of trustee meetings, said yesterday that the board has not yet decided whether to appoint a mayor before the June village elections. DiLeo has another year in his term as trustee.

Meehan, who owns a business expediting visas and passports, served as an alternate on the Manorhaven Village Board of Zoning Appeals from 2005 to 2008.
