Massapequa Park may get new cell tower

A narrow sliver of land along Sunrise Highway in Massapequa Park could soon be home to a new cellphone tower -- a possibility that Mayor James Altadonna Jr. said would help the village fulfill its legal and practical telecommunications obligations while sparing residents from having to live too close to such a structure.
Village officials Monday are to discuss the $4,000 purchase of a Nassau County-owned plot of land west of Park Boulevard by a train station parking lot as an “alternative site” for Verizon Wireless and other carriers seeking a tower for their equipment, Altadonna said.
The parcel measures roughly 5,400 square feet, according to a land survey.
“This location is the least disruptive to our residents,” Altadonna said.
Michael Martino, spokesman for Nassau County’s Department of Public Works, said in a statement the county “has had preliminary discussions” with village officials about the sale of the land.
A Verizon spokeswoman said it was too soon for the company to comment.
