Residents of Massapequa Park are owed nearly $2 million as part of New York State’s $10.5 billion in unclaimed funds, according to a recent news release.

Michael Caplice, the Long Island representative for State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, recently met with Massapequa Park Mayor James Altadonna to speak about Massapequa Park’s 4,298 claims. State law mandates that banks, insurance companies, utilities, investment companies and many other businesses surrender inactive accounts to the state, according to the state comptroller’s website. Residents who can prove that the money is theirs can get it back at no charge.

Caplice will be at Massapequa Park Village Hall, 151 Front St., on Tuesday to help residents determine if they are owed money. Residents can also check for unclaimed funds online or call toll-free at 800-221-9311.
