Massapequa tops Oceanside, Plainview JFK next
Massapequa turned in one of its best performances of the season against Oceanside Wednesday, and coach Mike Capone believes his team is hitting its stride at just the right time.
“[The whole team] seems to be peaking right now which is very good,” Capone said after the meet. “It could always change from one meet to the next but they hit tonight which was good.”
Katie Wall won three events, and the all-around with a 33.8, as Massapequa beat Oceanside 160.50-138.85. Capone said Wall “strives for perfection”, and against the Sailors appeared more motivated with the county championships less than three weeks away and a battle with unbeaten Plainview JFK upcoming Friday.
“She looked more energized tonight when it’s easy to be tired after a long day at school. She bumped it up a notch tonight,” Capone said.
Massapequa (6-1 Conference I) could be in for its most difficult meet of the season Friday against Plainview, which consistently scores around 165 where Massapequa’s high this season was a 162.5.
Capone knows it could take his team’s best performance to beat Plainview, but is still confident in its impressive rise to this point so far.
“It’s a very tough match against Plainview,” he said. “You sit there, you hope that you hit and at the end of the meet, your score is what it is. If we hit and they mess up a little it’ll be close.”
Capone also earned his 290th Conference I victory by beating Oceanside.
