Massapequa water district topic of hearing

Proposed improvements to Massapequa Water District facilities will be the subject of an Oyster Bay Town Board hearing next month.

The commissioners of the water district have asked the town board to approve improvements to the system, including well rehabilitation, treatment facilities for volatile organic compounds, storage tank improvements or replacement, hydrant replacement, water main replacement, and electrical, pump, lighting, alarm and safety improvements.

The total estimated cost is almost $12 million.

Massapequa Water District Commissioner Vincent Guadagno said the district needs to spend about $1.8 million for plant improvements mandated by the state. The rest of the funds would be borrowed only if needed to address pollution extending from the former Grumman plant in Bethpage, iron removal from the water supply or major repairs of pipes under Sunrise Highway. He said the tax impact of the improvements has not been established.

The hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Sept. 6 in the hearing room of Town Hall East, 54 Audrey Ave., Oyster Bay. The board could act on the request after the hearing.
