Mastic dirt road to be paved

Brookhaven Town will pave Roberts Street, a dirt road in Mastic, and consider similar improvements to a network of other earthen streets in the area.

The town board voted Tuesday to use some of $900,000 in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act bonds to bring “traffic calming and road improvements” to Roberts Street. The street is described as a notorious safety hazard by Councilman Daniel Panico, who represents the area and proposed the work.

The board also voted to explore the possibility -- and cost -- of improving other dirt roads. The roads include sections of Moriches Avenue, Monroe Street, Clifton Avenue, Wood Avenue, Cumberland Street, Allyn Street and Belden Street.

The $900,000 in recovery bonds will cover some of the work on the streets, town officials said.
