Matt Wieters' two-run single in 10th gives Orioles walk-off victory over White Sox

James Paxton allowed one earned run in six innings in his major-league debut and Justin Smoak and Kendrys Morales homered off Chris Archer as the Mariners beat the Tampa Bay Rays, 6-2, last night in Seattle.

Evan Longoria hit a two-run homer for Tampa Bay, which lost for the 11th time in the last 14 games. In the battle for the second wild card, the Rays lead the Orioles and Indians by one game and the Yankees by 21/2.

Orioles 4, White Sox 3: Matt Wieters hit a two-run single in the bottom of the 10th for Baltimore. It was the ninth consecutive loss for the White Sox, who grabbed a 3-2 lead in the top of the 10th on Conor Gillaspie's pinch-hit homer off Tommy Hunter (4-3). Baltimore was 1-for-17 with runners in scoring position before Wieters secured its third consecutive victory.

Pinch hitter Henry Urrutia started the winning rally with a one-out infield single against Addison Reed and pinch runner Chris Dickerson went all the way to third on Nick Markakis' bloop single. Reed bounced back with a strikeout of Nate McLouth, but Markakis stole second and both runners scored when Wieters lined a single to rightfield.

Angels 8, Rangers 3: Garrett Richards pitched effective innings and host Los Angeles parlayed three errors and Mark Trumbo's 31st home run into five early runs against Derek Holland. The Rangers' fifth loss in six games, coupled with Oakland's victory, put Texas 11/2 games behind the AL West-leading Athletics.

Athletics 2, Astros 1: Dan Straily (9-7) allowed two hits and struck out seven in seven scoreless innings for host Oakland.

Royals 4, Tigers 3: Salvador Perez hit a two-run homer off Justin Verlander for host Kansas City, which has won all five games Verlander has started against the Royals this season.

Cardinals 5, Pirates 0: Adam Wainwright threw seven shutout innings and David Freese homered for host St. Louis, which moved a half-game ahead of the Pirates in the NL Central.

Reds 4, Dodgers 3: Pinch runner Billy Hamilton stole second in the 10th inning to set up Todd Frazier's game-winning single as host Cincinnati handed the Dodgers their third straight loss.

Hamilton, 22, who set a professional record with 155 steals in the minors in 2012, is 4-for-4 on steal attempts since his promotion Monday. According to Elias, he is the first player in major-league history to record a steal in each of his first four games.

Phillies 6, Braves 5:Freddy Galvis (four hits) slammed a walk-off homer with one out in the ninth inning for Philadelphia. Andrelton Simmons had hit a two-out, two-run homer off Jonathan Papelbon in the top of the ninth.-- AP
