The Town of North Hempstead will hold a public memorial on Sunday for former Democratic state assemblywoman and North Hempstead town supervisor May Newburger.

Newburger, who died in August at her Great Neck home at the age of 92, will be memorialized in an afternoon ceremony at the Harbor Links Golf Course clubhouse, 1 Fairway Dr., Port Washington.

Newburger served as state assemblywoman from 1979 until 1986, and as town supervisor from 1994 until 2003. In addition to her accomplishments, which included environmental stewardship and women’s rights, Newburger was a mentor to many prominent Long Island, state and national leaders.

A reception is scheduled for noon, and the memorial will be held from 1 to 3 p.m.

Members of the public who wish to attend should RSVP by calling 311 from within the town.
