Justin Mayr's second goal, an unassisted tally with 5:42 left, proved to be the difference as St. Dominic edged host Mount St. Michael, 6-5, Tuesday in the CHSAA Class A Intersectional boys lacrosse championship.
The game was in doubt for much of the first half as the Bayhawks faced deficits of 4-1 in the second quarter and 4-3 at the half.
But the Oyster Bay school came back with two scores in the third quarter on goals by James O'Brien and Mayr to grab a 5-4 lead.
Mayr's goal extended the lead to 6-4.
It is the program's first title, St. Dominic coach Matt O'Brien told Newsday.
"I couldn't be any more proud of the team I had," O'Brien said. "I have great individuals, but an even better group of kids."
Dan Ahern had three goals and one assist and Peter Izzo made 12 saves for St. Dominic (11-6).
Mount St. Michael made a game of it late as goalie Dave Lulgjuraj scored with 30 seconds remaining to make it a one-point affair.
Pat McEnaney (2), Mike McEnaney and Tim McDermott also scored for Mount St. Michael (15-3).
