Mazzone, Ryan key Ward Melville's quarterfinal win
Will Mazzone scored on an assist from Jimmy Ryan with 7:05 left in the fourth quarter to give No. 2 Ward Melville (15-2) a one-goal lead in its 11-9 win over visiting No. 7 Smithtown East in the Suffolk Class A boys lacrosse quarterfinals yesterday.
Ryan finished with three goals and two assists, and Al Destefano scored two goals. Ward Melville will hosto No. 3 Smithtown West at 4 p.m. on Friday in the semifinals. Ryan Desimone led Smithtown East (10-8) with four goals.Smithtown West 12, Sachem North 8: Kyle Keenan had three goals and three assists and James Pannell added four goals and one assist to lead No. 3 Smithtown West (13-4). Matt Schultz chipped in with three goals and two assists, and Dominic Gianino made 11 saves. Phil Schaefer led No. 6 Sachem North (11-7) with three goals.West Islip 16, Whitman 4: Nicky Galasso scored three goals and added four assists and Andrew Hodgson scored three goals to lead No. 1 West Islip (16-1), which will host to No. 4 Connetquot at 4 p.m. on Friday. Matt Gierl made 12 saves for No. 9 Whitman (11-7).
Division 16, Plainedge 8: Tom Nuckel scored five goals with one assist and Corey Triola had four goals and one assist to lead No. 3 Division (16-1) in the Nassau Class B quarterfinals. Fred Mase added two goals and three assists. Division will play No. 2 Garden City at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Hofstra. R.J. Rossi led No. 6 Plainedge (10-7) with four goals and two assists.
St. Dominic 8, Archbishop Stepinac 7: Dan Ahern scored the game-winner unassisted with two minutes left for No. 2 St. Dominic (15-3) in a CHSAA Class A semifinal. Ahern also had three assists, and James O'Brien scored two goals for St. Dominic, which will play St. Mary's for the championship at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Adelphi.GIRLS LACROSSE
Farmingdale 20, Port Washington 8: Melanie Raso had six goals and seven assists for a season-high 13 points and Kyra Ochwat scored seven goals for No. 1 Farmingdale (11-3) in a Nassau Class A semifinal at Denton Avenue Field. Alex Gurecki made 13 saves for the Dalers, who play No. 2 Massapequa in the county final at 4 p.m. next Wednesday at Hofstra. Alexa Frocarro led No. 5 Port Washington (15-1-1) with five goals and one assist.
Massapequa 12, Baldwin 7: Rory Sadoff scored four goals and Maddie Pimental added two goals and two assists to lead No. 2 Massapequa (7-9). Allie Rodgers led No. 6 Baldwin (11-4-1) with three goals.
Rocky Point 11, Sayville 4: Caitlin Gargan scored two goals and added four assists and Kara Mupo had three goals for No. 1 Rocky Point (17-1) in a Class B semifinal. The game was a rematch of last year's final, which was won by Sayville. Rocky Point will play No. 3 Hauppauge in the final at 5:30 p.m. next Wednesday at the Dowling Sports Complex. Jordan Lite led No. 4 Sayville (11-7) with two goals.
Bayport-Blue Point 16, Mt. Sinai 12: Junior Loren Generi scored seven goals, including the 200th of her career, for No. 2 Bayport-Blue Point (9-7) in a Suffolk Class C semifinal. Christy Thoden added three goals and four assists. Bayport-Blue Point advances to its first county final, where it will play No. 1 Shoreham-Wading River, the six-time defending Suffolk Class C champions, at 8 p.m. next Wednesday at the Dowling Sports Complex. Rachel Dillon led No. 3 Mt. Sinai (8-9) with four goals. Shoreham-Wading River 19, Babylon 7: Kait Brosco had five goals and one assist and Jen Devito added four goals and two assists to lead the balanced attack of No. 1 Shoreham-Wading River (15-2), which got goals from 10 players against No. 4 Babylon in the Suffolk Class C semifinals. Shelby Fredericks led No. 4 Babylon (9-8) with two goals and one assist.
