Medford recycler gets TV time
A Medford recycling company will be featured in an episode of a new National Geographic Television program, “Break It Down: New York Scrap Yard.”
Gershow Recycling will be featured May 5 at 10 p.m., a spokesman for the company said. National Geographic spent “several hundred hours” at Gershow last summer to produce the program, the spokesman, Hank Russell, said.
National Geographic has said the show will illustrate that in “just one day, this family-run business will crush 3 million pounds of scrap — including as many as 500 cars and 20 city buses — to create a multimillion-dollar mound of steel,” Russell said.
The program focuses on activities in Gershow's 40-acre Medford scrap yard. The show “is an eye-opener to anyone interested in learning about the scrap metal industry and recycling in general,” said Kevin Gershowitz, president of Gershow Recycling.
The episode will also be shown at 1 a.m. May 6 and 6 p.m. May 12, Russell said.
