Meeting about disputed Port Washington land

North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman and Councilman Fred Pollack plan to meet with residents in Port Washington Thursday night about a disputed piece of land, a site where the town’s Housing Authority once proposed a housing complex but one that some residents insist is a park.

The 6:30 p.m. meeting will be at the Littig House Community Center in the Harbor Homes complex off Port Washington Boulevard and Harbor Road.

Residents, members of the Hands of Change Civic Association and a representative from the North Hempstead Housing Authority have been invited.

In February, the authority decided to withdraw plans to build a 48-unit affordable senior housing complex on the 1.50-acre parcel after residents expressed concerns about increased traffic, the impact on property values and the removal of open space that had been used for recreation.

The civic association says that the parcel is a park. The Housing Authority says it does not have the authority to designate land for recreational purposes.
