Public meeting on anti-pollution measures

Plans to address pollution from a former dry-cleaning facility in Glenwood Landing will be discussed at a public meeting at 7 p.m. Oct. 13, in Glenwood Landing Elementary School.

State officials want to continue existing measures to treat contaminated soil vapor and groundwater at the Penetrex Processing site. They said no additional steps were needed to clean up the pollution. The proposed remedy would also impose limits on future uses of the property to prevent human exposure to potentially carcinogenic solvents, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

The 1-acre site at 1 Shore Rd., near Hempstead Harbor, was named as a "Class 2" site on the state's Superfund list in 1993, meaning that it poses a significant risk to public health. The DEC said an investigation showed pollution was limited to the site and has not migrated into the surrounding residential neighborhood.

According to a DEC database, the landlord leased the facility to Penetrex in the 1980s; the company has abandoned the site and the property houses a commercial building and a two-unit apartment building. Potentially harmful vapor in the soil below is controlled by sub-slab depressurization systems.
